Chatter in the atmosphere that this is the saddest city in the world. I don’t buy it. This place is like a great romance, surprise, great stories, heartbreaking lows but days like today are the highest highs. No one on the corner has swagger like us. Ha! Driving down Broadway I see a group of teens from Grant High with skateboards. A tall light skinned black kid with skinny jeans and a jean jacket on a longboard with his big afro blowing in the wind. A little white girl hippie chick jumps on the back end and hugs him holding tight riding goofy down the sidewalk. That’s about as Portland as it gets.

I read that every Portlander lives three lives. A drummer in a band, designer, and full time student. A graphic designer, DJ, family man. A hippie, CEO, and talent manager. It was that feeling of opportunity and discovery and feeling of not fitting in that drove people out west to start their own lives. Those that wanted out of California and couldn’t afford or didn’t get Seattle settled into our little spot in the middle. As Chuck Palahniuk described us, “the most cracked of the cracked pots.” Usually we take for granted its beauty but today we all remembered why we were in love in the first place.
